How to read a marking datasheet

A DENFOIL datasheet answers five questions before you order — what the product is, where it performs, which numbers back it up, how it is mounted, and which standards apply. This guide walks through each field.

Marking products are specified in numbers, not adjectives. A datasheet that cannot tell you the luminance after 60 minutes, the slip-resistance class or the service temperature range is not documentation — it is marketing. This article explains the fields on a DENFOIL® datasheet and what to check before you specify a product for a demanding environment.

1. Product identity and format

Every datasheet starts with the product name, the product code and the physical format with units — for example a tape supplied as 50 mm × 18 m with a thickness of 0.15 mm. Check the format against your substrate and your cutting or mounting plan first; a correct product in the wrong width still fails on site.

2. Performance values with conditions

A performance figure is only meaningful together with its test condition. Two examples of how values appear on a marking datasheet:

  • Photoluminance is stated in mcd/m² at named intervals after a defined excitation, measured per DIN 67510 — the excitation illuminance and duration are part of the figure, and a value measured at 25 lx cannot be compared with one measured at 1000 lx.
  • Service temperature is stated as a range, such as −30 °C to +70 °C. Check it against the coldest and the warmest the surface itself reaches, not the room around it.

If a value on any supplier's sheet has no unit, no time base or no test method, treat it as unverified.

3. Slip resistance

Floor marking intended for walked-on surfaces carries an R-classification, on a scale from R9 to R13. Match the class to the environment's requirements — wet process areas, ship decks and dry corridors do not share one requirement. Ask which test the class comes from: a ramp test and an estimate from a pendulum test are not the same evidence.

4. Mounting and substrate

The mounting section states substrate requirements, surface preparation and application temperature. Most adhesion failures trace back to this section being skipped, not to the product. Operations and installation teams should read it before the order is placed, not after.

5. Standards references

A standards reference on a DENFOIL datasheet is specific: it names the standard in full — such as ISO 7010:2019 for registered safety pictograms, or ISO 17398 for material class, environment and expected service life — and it applies to that product line, not to the portfolio as a whole. A sheet that lists standards without connecting them to measured values deserves a follow-up question.

Service life

Service life is stated with its condition, for example "10 years outdoor, vertically mounted, under central-European UV exposure". A duration without a mounting orientation and exposure profile is not a service life — it is a guess.
